Batman Just Gave Himself An Even Better ‘Rebirth’ in DC Comics
After the chaos of the last few years in Gotham, it seems as though Batman has managed to bring forth a new era for himself and his family.
In the final issue of James Tynion IV’s Batman, the Dark Knight brings an end to Fear State with the beginning of an even better Rebirth era for Gotham City. Having its share of major crisis events, it’s no wonder that Gotham City has been turning away from Batman and his family of vigilantes. However, despite Scarecrow’s attempt to bring Gotham to its knees in fear, the Caped Crusader has managed to bring forth a new era for Gotham and the Bat-Family.
In Fear State, Jonathan Crane’s Scarecrow has attempted to take advantage of Gotham’s growing anti-vigilante sentiments after major citywide takeovers seen in recent events such as the City of Bane and the Joker War. While Batman and his family fight for Gotham as always, the attacks aren’t without their high levels of devastation and losses. However, despite the city’s lack of faith in him, Batman has refused to give up on Gotham even when its mayor chooses to bring in the corrupt security force known as the Magistrate in an attempt to replace the Dark Knight and his family.
In Batman #117 from writer James Tynion IV and artist Jorge Jimenez, Batman handily defeats Scarecrow and PK-01, the Magistrate’s top enforcer gone rogue. Meanwhile, the rest of his family are able to take down the Magistrate’s floating command center. However, while Miracle Molly has been helping the Dark Knight, she can’t help but be tempted by the machine Scarecrow intended to use to fill Gotham with mass amounts of trauma, wanting to reverse its effects to remove pre-existing trauma altogether (including Batman’s). However, Bruce Wayne convinces her to stay her hand, believing that humanity has the capacity to overcome even their greatest days of darkness. Likewise, he seems to be right, as the Bat-Signal lights up for the first time since before the Joker War, marking a renewed era of hope and restored faith in the Bat-Family.
While 2016’s Rebirth initiative may have served as a new publishing relaunch for the entire DC Universe, Batman and his family have just brought forth an even better rebirth for Gotham City after some pretty dark times, with Gotham’s faith in its heroes having finally been regained. Despite all of Gotham’s fear that Scarecrow has tried to perpetuate and heighten, the citizens are able to overcome and see Batman and his family for what they’ve always been: sources of hope and justice.
As DC’s ongoing Batman series is about to transition to a new writer with Joshua Williamson, Fear State serves as the perfect ending to James Tynion IV’s run, which has lasted more than 30 issues. Now, a new era is about to begin that will see Batman and his family in a much better position to serve and protect Gotham City. Hope has finally been reborn in the DC Universe’s darkest city, something it hasn’t had in a long time.
