Super Dragon Ball Heroes Does Right by the Buu Saga’s Strongest Henchman

Dabura doesn’t get to show his best stuff in Dragon Ball Z, but Super Dragon Ball Heroes lets fans know what it really means to be the Demon King.

Dragon Ball Z doesn’t give Dabura the respect he deserves. He is mind-controlled by Babidi, made light of by the Saiyans, and quickly disposed of by Majin Buu. For all of the warnings the Supreme Kai gives, it seems like there should be a little more to the king of the Demon Realm.

Super Dragon Ball Heroes gracefully provides Dabura with the support he needs to shine properly. The King of the Demon Realm receives a couple of demon-related powerups that make him a threat to even the stronger fighters. Dabura is already a fan favorite because of how cool he is, but now he is able to prove himself worthy of all the praise.

Dabura’s redemption story is contextualized by what he rises up from. In Dragon Ball Z, he is introduced as Babidi’s mind slave. He may be Babidi’s strongest henchman, but that’s all he is. Puppets always seem unimpressive compared to the ones pulling the strings.

The Demon King also does very little in the overarching story. His only major accomplishments are killing Kibito and turning Krillin and Piccolo to stone. All of these victims are restored by the end of the day. He also convinces Babidi to take control of Vegeta. Majin Vegeta is a catalyst for major events, but fans don’t remember Dabura for instigating it. Overall, Dabura’s contribution to the plot is minimal.

Dabura’s lack of influence is made worse still when he’s pitted against the Saiyans. While the Supreme Kai insists they all work together to fight the Demon King, the Saiyans send Gohan, the most out-of-shape of the group, to fight alone. The match is pretty cool with Dabura using all sorts of unique powers to keep Gohan on the ropes, but the tension is undercut by the presence of Goku and Vegeta. Dabura is supposedly around Perfect Cell’s level of power, but Goku and Vegeta have trained for years to surpass that level. A villain who should come off as menacing is nothing more than an annoying obstacle for the heroes.

The final nail in the coffin is Dabura’s loss at the hands of Majin Buu. Not only does the destroyer of worlds make quick work of the Demon King, but he finishes him off in one of the most disrespectful ways imaginable. He turns Dabura into a cookie and eats him. There is also some anime filler where he mellows out in Heaven, but the point is clear. Dabura is not the threat that the Supreme Kai makes him out to be.

Super Dragon Ball Heroes gives Dabura a much better chance to show what he’s made of. In Dragon Ball Z, the Demon Realm is used simply as background information to contextualize Dabura. Nowadays, the Demon Realm is a fully fleshed-out part of the Dragon Ball universe. It comes complete with new villains, a magic system, and all sorts of previously-unknown powerups for demons. The expansion of the lore of the Demon Realm gives Dabura an opportunity to acquire greater power not seen in the original series.

Sure enough, Dabura, or rather Xeno Dabura, gains all sorts of new forms and powers over the course of Super Dragon Ball Heroes. Xeno Dabura’s most notable powerups are his Demon God forms. These new forms imply he’s now on par with Demigra, the central antagonist of Dragon Ball Xenoverse.

Xeno Dabura’s power is best measured by who he’s put up against. In his Demon God form, he is able to easily defeat Xeno Majin Buu, a powered-up version of Kid Buu. His second Demon God form even necessitates the fusion of Xeno Goku and Xeno Vegeta into Xeno Gogeta. The power-scaling in Heroes doesn’t necessarily match that of the official series, but the upward trend on Dabura’s part is undeniable.

Through Super Dragon Ball Heroes, Dabura finally proves himself worthy of being called King of the Demon Realm. He even goes two steps beyond that title to become a Demon God. Dabura now has the complete set of looks, abilities, and power needed to earn himself due respect from the Dragon Ball fanbase.
